Beyond the Game: Shaping a New Perspective

As athletes, it's easy to get caught up in the grind—constantly striving for the next win, the next personal record, or that scholarship offer you’ve been dreaming of. These are good things, but have you ever considered the bigger picture? What if the things we desire, as good as they may seem, don’t align with God’s purpose for us?

The Danger of a Secular Perspective

The world tells us success is about personal achievement, recognition, and self-fulfillment. A secular worldview places "self" at the center: our desires, our plans, and our vision for success. While this may lead to temporary satisfaction, it often leaves us feeling empty, always craving more.

But there’s a different way to see the world—a Biblical perspective that places Jesus at the center of everything. It's not about ignoring your dreams but understanding that God has a bigger, better plan for your life than you could ever imagine. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

A Shift in Focus

When you begin to look at life through the lens of Scripture, your goals don’t disappear—they take on new meaning. You’re not just working for yourself anymore; you’re working for God. Colossians 3:23 tells us, "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters."

This shifts your entire perspective on training, competition, and life. Your achievements become opportunities to glorify God, and your challenges become chances to trust Him more deeply.

Reflection

Take a moment and think about the one thing you really want right now. Maybe it's to make the team, to hit that game-winning shot, or to secure a spot at the next level in your sport.

Now ask yourself this question...

“How does this fit into God’s plan for my life?”

It’s a challenging question, but it’s also freeing. When your dreams are aligned with God's purpose, you can move forward with confidence, knowing He’s guiding your steps. If they’re not, maybe it's time to reconsider what you’re chasing.

I know how easy it is to get wrapped up in your dreams and the daily grind. I’ve been there, too—chasing goals and trying to prove myself. But I can tell you from experience that when you place your trust in God’s plan, everything changes. There's a peace that comes when you know that you're not striving alone and that the One who created you is guiding your steps.

So, as you pursue your athletic dreams, I encourage you to pause, reflect, and seek His direction. Ask yourself how your goals fit into His plan, and trust that He has something even greater in store for you than you could ever imagine.

Remember...a life built on His purpose brings success and fulfillment that the world can't offer.

Dedicated to your success,

Sam
